About the practice

MBA specialize in new buildings and alterations in sensitive environments. We have a particular interest in acoustics. Designs are evidence-based, demonstrating an understanding of setting, history and significance. Our aim is sustainable use of buildings and sites. We add value in cultural, environmental and economic terms. Since 1991 we have worked in highly protected sites including Oxford Colleges, Grade I listed buildings, Conservation Areas, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Scheduled Monuments in and around London and the south east, as well as regeneration projects centred on heritage assets across the UK. What distinguishes MBA is a practical, research-based approach to conservation coupled with imaginative design and attention to detail We often succeed in unlocking potential in difficult or contested sites. Each project is designed to suit its own particular circumstances. We are expert at community consultation and dialogue with local and national authorities. We think beyond ‘how will it look’ to ‘what will it feel like’ to live in, because architecture comes alive with inhabitation. Our work is energy efficient, sustainable and popular in use. It ranges from small scale alterations to listed buildings, medium sized new build and alteration projects, to larger scale urban developments. We undertake commissions for one-off houses, and carry out small works locally.
