Scheduled Ancient Monument, Within a Conservation Area
The creation of a new student courtyard of 32 student rooms on a waterside location nestling up to a Saxon Castle tower in the centre of Oxford. The project involved maintenance and repair of the existing Scheduled Ancient Monument, and posed numerous interesting technical difficulties including building above a historic canal wall. The project was completed on time and to a tight budget, and won two design awards. An energy in use study by Oxford Brookes University demonstrated that at 190 KWH/m2/A it is some 20% more energy efficient than comparator schemes. The building is highly popular in use and makes a positive contribution to the character of the area, referencing the gabled houses that once occupied the site and the industrial history of the area.
