Listed Building - Grade II*, New Build
van Heyningen and Haward Architects LLP
First Floor, 1a Harmood Street , Chalk Farm , LONDON , NW1 8DN , United Kingdom
No.1 Smithery, (completed July 2010) is a partnership project between the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, the National Maritime Museum and the Imperial War Museum. It provides dedicated storage and curatorial facilities for the Museums' 4,000 ship models, a regional Touring Exhibition Gallery, and museum quality Exhibition Galleries. The building is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade II* listed, and was in a state of advanced dilapidation. van Heyningen and Haward led the team which established the feasibility proposals, supported the funding process to HLF and others, and delivered all works on site to establish No.1 Smithery, fully restoring the historic building. Close teamwork between van Heyningen and Haward, Max Fordham and the Clients allowed the development of innovative low energy stores that use passive measures to maintain an archive quality environment. The design establishes a counterpoint between the new interventions and the detail of the historic fabric, with English Heritage describing the project as "a first rate example of what we term "Constructive Conservation"...This is conservation of the highest order."
