This project involved complex alterations to an existing Grade II* church in Herne Hill, south London. We came into the project at a point where a previous architect had failed to obtain the necessary permissions for internal alterations, despite working on the project for nearly a decade. The brief was to upgrade the interior of the church, relocate a timber memorial screen, provide meeting rooms, a crèche area, entrance area, kitchen and WCs, all within this very fine interior designed by the eminent Victorian architect G.E. Street. The church was also made accessible to disabled people. Our key innovative design solution was to propose a full-height glazed screen to separate off the new entrance area from the main part of the church. The glazing is hung from a new oak-clad steel roof truss; as far as we know, this is a solution unique to us and allows the screen and glazing to be light-weight so that the whole interior of the church still appears to be one volume. This was very important in allowing us to obtain the necessary permissions from the work, which we did within 6 months of being appointed. As with most of our projects, we acted as project manager and dealt with cost control, and the project was finished within the client's budget and within the original contract sum. Fine fitted joinery, massive hinged doors to link the entrance area with the nave, and careful design of junctions with the existing fabric were all done by us.
