Within a Conservation Area, Alteration to existing property
Milman Road is a contemporary extension and refurbishment to an Edwardian end of terrace house on the edge of Queen's Park, London NW6. The new extension introduces the house to a new combined kitchen and living space open to the garden. A series of simple panels of brickwork and glazing derive from modular sequences found in the elevation of the original building. These culminate in the cubic projecting corner window serving the first floor bedroom. The impetus for the cubic window was derived from the corner bay window that dominates the existing house. We particularly liked the manner in which this feature unified separate elevations while maintaining a sense of transparency. The project had a long history of failed schemes dating back to 2004. Although the house itself is not listed, it is located in the Queen?s Park Conservation Area. The influence of the Queen's Park Society and the site?s prominent position made the planners particularly interested in any form of development. The previous architects grappled with the planners for three years over whether the development should take the form of a contemporary or pastiche solution. We inherited the project and sought to define the planner's main concern: "to preserve and enhance" in contemporary terms. Lengthy and detailed negotiations with the planners were required to establish this principle.
