A stunning conversion of a dilapidated farm house and outbuildings into a seven bedroom home with generous living spaces, games room, swimming pool and adjoining office space – all in keeping with the local area and with creative build and architectural solutions to numerous challenges. One of the most significant challenges facing the design of the project was the need to create an identity for the building. Before the conversion, the main farmhouse lacked a front door – a main entrance – and felt very dark and dingy. On top of that, having undergone many renovations and updates over the years, the vast majority of original features had been lost. As a result, the build needed to create its own ‘new’ identity. This was achieved by using a number of different design techniques but one of the most significant was the decision to rotate aspect of the building 180degrees so the main entrance faced a south-easterly direction. The decision was also made to introduce a second gable at the new front of the building, adding symmetry and allowing for a central entrance to be introduced in between. Original features were preserved where they existed and where was possible. For instance, a huge fireplace that approximately dates back to the 1850s was kept and redesigned to heat both dining and living rooms.
