Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
Slab Design Union were commissioned by a private client to review a project in the Moseley Conservation Area of Birmingham that has received planning and conservation area consent. An initial feasibility exercise of the approved design led to a developed scheme that created better connectivity with the garden, an enhanced landscape scheme and an industrial aesthetic as a visual counterpoint to the existing Arts and Crafts property. The internal layout was modified and an exposed steel structure introduced to further open up the ground floor, along with new openings in the existing walls that allowed for an uninterrupted spatial flow from front to rear within the property. A materials palette of zinc cladding and rainwater goods, large format rooflights, a fully glazed roof and black steel framed doors led to the development of a contemporary looking building, with an interior of timber flooring, bespoke fitted joinery and feature lighting that created a large multifunctional space and unified the interior. A new terrace, steps and ramps created improved access from the front to the rear of the property, and from the new extension to the garden.
