Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
A project to reorganise the ground floor of an existing detached property, Slab Design Union proposed a new extension that created an interconnected layout and mitigated overlooking and solar gain. The existing property was constructed in the mid-90’s on land previously occupied by a walled garden within the demise of a listed villa. We proposed a reorganisation of the ground floor plan including the partial demolition of the existing utility space, improved connectivity with the garden, a better spatial flow and the opportunity to bring natural light deep into the plan. The new extension included a relocated utility space with a new WC, and a ‘wrap-around’ summer room set behind a new brick and timber canopy to mitigate solar gain and reduce overlooking from adjacent properties. The build-line of the new extension was set back from an existing mature tree within the garden. A simple palette of matching brickwork and timber windows, doors and a pergola with brise soleil above created a refined response to the site with the internal spaces utilising the existing brick walls as part of the materials palette, along with timber flooring, white walls and large format roolights to bring natural light into the property.
