Listed Building - Grade I, New Build
A house by the Adam brothers, rescued after many years as a hospital and re-instated as a single house. The interest and value of this Grade I listed building had been lost as a result of its brutal conversion for hospital use. However, as with many buildings, some clues remained and with a bit of historical knowledge the fine, stately rooms were recreated. The stone facade was stripped of decades of paint, and lost parts replaced. Inside, a wonderful flowing staircase running through two floors has been created. Partly inspired by the austere classicism of Sir John Soane it is built in timber with a wrought iron handrail and balustrade. The design replaced a series of crude, late 20th century flights. The stone facade repairs, the new staircases and the other internal specialist works were carried put under our supervision in collaboration with highly skilled craftsmen and specialists with whom we regularly operate.
