Working closely with Lewisham Council, their young people and partners, RCKa developed proposals for a facility that had to be world-class in every way, from innovative sustainable construction and high-quality design to extensive participation of young people and the local community whose involvement continued through the detailed design, construction, management and governance of the building and services. Our role was extensive, from identifying the capital funding stream and helping prepare the bid that secured £3.5m for the project, to identifying the potential of the development site following work to assess LBL’s community assets. Central to our vision was the creation of a catalyst for local regeneration with a vibrant heart, a place that engages and welcomes visitors and is alive with activity and opportunity. The internal layout of the building has been carefully designed to reconcile the functional requirements of the brief with exciting high-quality spaces. Clean lines and dramatic open spaces aid security through natural surveillance and result in a bright and vibrant inclusive internal atmosphere. Uses include: IT suite with free WiFi and hot-desking; Business & community support; Meeting rooms; Performance space; Training kitchen; NHS Health Consultation.
