As part of the scheme to convert the Grade II listed barn at Sutton Farm, QAD were commissioned to prepare detailed design drawings for 2no. new build single storey dwellings to replace a former agricultural shed. The dwellings are set at a lower level to the barn and a key consideration was to ensure that the design of the dwellings remianed secondary to the main barn and did not damage the setting of the listed building. The dwellings were arranged to look out over a shared turning circle and form a courtyard space that incorporated private garden space to each dwelling. The dwellings were arranged to provide an outward looking view to the woodland beyond and incorporated large areas of glazing to the living areas to provide views out. The retaining wall to the terraces of the main barn conceals the roof to each dwelling preserving the outlook of the barn to the woodland and minimising the impact of the new dwellings on the overall setting of the barn. Traditional stone with a smaller coursing height to the barn was utilised to compliment the existing barn alongisde new materials such as cedar cladding and aluminium framed windows creating a contemporary aesthetic to the dwellings.
