About the practice

Proctor & Matthews Architects was established in 1988 by Stephen Proctor and Andrew Matthews. We are an award winning practice of architects, masterplanners, urban designers and researchers. Our extensive portfolio of completed work demonstrates a focused commitment to imaginative and appropriate designs, tailored to the specifics of each commission. This combines a regard for historical contexts and cultural identities with the need to create a socially and environmentally responsive architecture. Current work includes the design of a new urban quarter of over 400 homes at Northstowe for Urban Splash; a flagship new office building for Homes England in Northstowe, and a Later Living community in the centre of Cheltenham for PegasusLife. The practice has informed the current UK residential debate with focused research into the twenty-first century home, emerging lifestyles and the integration of sustainable technologies. Over the last fifteen years we have also developed design expertise in the utilisation of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). We have a reputation for delivering award winning projects of high architectural quality, winning over 65 design and construction awards over the past 30 years. In 2019 Proctor & Matthews received an RIBA East Award for the completion phase of the landmark development Abode at Great Kneighton in Cambridge and a HAPPI Award for Steepleton in Tetbury at this year’s Housing Design Awards.
