Alteration to existing property, Scheduled Ancient Monument
Porters Lodge , College Road , H M Naval Base , PORTSMOUTH , PO1 3LJ , United Kingdom
Pritchard Architecture led the revitalisation of Newhaven Fort, Sussex's largest defensive structure and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, transforming it into a vibrant, accessible visitor attraction. Commissioned by Lewes District Council and backed by a £7.5 million Towns Fund grant, the project demanded a conservation-led approach balancing complex heritage needs with enhanced public appeal. Sensitive repairs to gun emplacements, casemates and WWII structures brought long-neglected spaces back into use for the first time in decades. Heritage constraints were embraced as opportunities, with contemporary interventions revealing original features while remaining respectful of the Fort's significance. Since completion, visitor numbers have reached unprecedented levels.
