Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade I
Porters Lodge , College Road , H M Naval Base , PORTSMOUTH , PO1 3LJ , United Kingdom
This Grade I Listed building, home to Jane Austen from 1809 to 1817, where she wrote and revised all six of her celebrated novels, required complete roof restoration after over seventy years without major intervention. Acting as lead architect, our role encompassed close collaboration with the Museum's Director and curatorial team, ensuring the collection and daily visitor operations were protected throughout. Conservation challenges included retaining maximum historic fabric, carefully repairing sixteenth-century timbers, and salvaging original roof tiles. A notable ecological dimension saw us working with ecologists to safeguard a resident bat colony, sensitively rehomed into boxes within Jane Austen's own oak tree.
