Sunny Bank Primary School is located on Sunny Bank. External aspects of the site include a hard standing playground, play-area, fielded sports pitch and free-play greenery, a hard standing pathway and parking bays. The design development and scheme consisted of the creation of a new classroom block with KS1 and KS2 Classrooms, Group Rooms and Staff Offices as well as the relocation of the existing on site nursery to a new building adjacent to the main school. These two builds, external play areas and the extension of car parking facilities compromise the extent of the new development. Sunny Bank Primary School has now become part of the Island Academy Trust and the popularity of the school is increasing. The school’s location means it is ideally placed to meet the demand for primary school places in Sittingbourne East where housing is currently being built on. Sunny Bank Primary School currently has 45 pupils and it is proposed to increase this to 60 in the future, dependant on the build -out rate of new housing. The purpose of the project is to increase the capacity of the existing Sunny Bank School from 1.5FE to 2FE and to amalgamate the whole school on to the Main Site. Not only were these two buildings designed within the redevelopment but also internal reconfigurations to the site were made to give the school a more ergonomically and welcoming ambiance promoting learning for all ages. Due to the amalgamation of the site external landscaping also had to be expanded to cope with the number of pupils. This included a new play area located between the two builds and extended car parking facilities.
