The project was the provision of a new library for Horley which was to be located in a prominent location on the high street. The new library was to be fresh and inviting utilising the existing branding principles of the county. Playle & Partners undertook a full service role to deliver this new library and community facility. The Surrey Library team requested the area designated to the public was to be maximised as much as possible. This meant that the spaces were designed to be flexible so they could be used for lectures as well as traditional library activities. One of the aims of the building was for it to income generate, through the hiring of spaces to external bodies. Playle & Partners, acting as architects and lead designers, proposed two meeting rooms that utilised an acoustic folding partition with a lockable kitchenette. This proposal created three possible articulations of the space, thus increasing its desirability and potential rental income. Locating these spaces near to an external door allowed the potential for out of hour use. The coordination between the different members of the team was essential in delivering a facility that met both the needs of the stakeholders and was cost effective. The staff required a breakout space, workroom and large storage facility. Good planning of these spaces within the building footprint meant the transportation of books was minimised by accommodating the workroom and storage next to the entrance to the rear car park and external book delivery point. Since opening, the project has meant attendance to the library has doubled and it has become one of the leading libraries of the county.
