Within a Conservation Area
Thrive is a national charity which teaches gardening and life skills to those with learning, physical, sensory impairment and mental health disabilities. Pedder & Scampton were commissioned in December 2007 to design a new building for Thrive's activities in Battersea Park, London. The building accommodates both the regular gardening activities for the above user groups and training activities in therapeutic gardening for other professionals both local and from overseas. Spaces include those for practical and theoretical garden training, an office and communal facilities such as a kitchen. The building is complemented by a redesigned garden being constructed by staff and the user groups. Pedder & Scampton were appointed following a competitive interview process. The client has been advised throughout by an RIBA Design Advisor. The design process included consultation with the user group, the therapists and management staff, the Trustees of the charity, the Friends of Battersea Park and the Local Authority. The consultant team included a Sustainability consultant who prepared sun/shading computer study and thermal modelling analysis during the initial design stages. These enabled the building to be careful positioned on the site to benefit from tree shading and the location of window openings to provide natural daylight and ventilation through most the interior while minimising heat loss. The thermal modelling and consideration of alternative heating sources such as a log gasification boiler and air source heat pumps have resulted in the building having a projected performance 12.8% over Building Regulation Part L requirements. The Planning application included Conservation Area consent. In addition to the drawings and Design and Access statement, Pedder & Scampton prepared a Flood risk assessment, a bio-diversity and Heritage statements, and worked with the Park Tree officer on the preparation of a tree audit and tree protection measures. The project received full Planning permission in January 2009. The construction was completed in 2014 with P&S novated to the main contractor. The contract sum was £450,000. A further kiosk building was erected in 2016 as a social enterprise plant sales shop.
