This house sits on a large plot just outside the local conservation area and required much attention both internally and externally if we were to fulfil the client’s brief of creating a modern, open-plan family home. We used elegant forms to unify the disjointed massing of the existing chalet bungalow to give it a much more modern appearance from outside. Internally we reconfigured the space, incorporating a self-contained annex to create one family space without losing any bedrooms. Widening the hallway opens up the house, allows for more storage and a view through and out into the garden. Two en-suite bedrooms have glazed double doors leading out onto the garden. A new staircase leads up to an open-plan living area on the first floor with views out over the estuary to the front. A dining area sits centrally and to the rear is the kitchen with doors to the rear garden and deck. Our design carefully considered neighbouring properties in respect of overlooking and this sensitive approach was critical in the project's success.
