Para 79 house, Sited in AONB, Sited in SSSI area
Office For Contemporary Rural Architecture
4, Meeting Street , Appledore , Bideford , EX39 1RJ , United Kingdom
Our clients came to us asking for help to create a home and business that connects them to the landscape and the community. The ambition is to create a genuinely sustainable project focusing initially on the landscape and then the building, to ensue that the site is considered holistically. As a base the house had to be designed to enable Passivhaus accreditation from the outset, but in discussions we were able to widen the scope to include issues of carbon footprint and plastic use and have developed a design to minimize both of these on site. The building is conceived as a linear pavilion with cantilevered plains to offer solar shading and enhance the linear nature of the building. The forms are organised around a central courtyard to enable high levels of natural light to reach all parts of the building and critically ensure that the landscape is connected to every space.
