The project involved the full refurbishment of an existing loft space, together with the complete redesign and construction of two roof dormers, all within a Conservation Area. Prior to this project the loft was poorly designed with an incoherent layout and low-grade construction. The design sought to retain the existing primary structure, but to completely revise and space’s layout to create a calming and interesting space, finished in high quality materials and detailing. The new zinc clad dormers were used to define the main volume of the new room, with vertical larch wood cladding used to line their sides and unify the resulting space. The timber panelling was used to conceal eaves storage cupboards and to orchestrate the locations of doors, windows, fixtures and fittings.
