Brownfield site, New Build, Within a Conservation Area
The Long House is a large new-build home located on a sloping one acre plot at the edge of the picturesque town of Somerton. The house is integrated into the existing landscape and built into the hillside, overlooking a pond, mill stream and the newly designed garden. The Long House strikes a careful design balance between traditional, local and contemporary materials: local Blue Lias stone walls, lime render, charred timber cladding, dark grey zinc roof, black steel windows, brushed stainless steel window linings and EPDM rubber dormer. The concrete frame of the house plays a crucial role in the interior design with exposed concrete walls and ceilings in many spaces. NCA also designed a blackened steel and oak staircase, and the bespoke limed wax oak kitchen which is at the heart of the house, along with many made-to measure fittings.
