We have worked with London’s oldest wine and spirit merchants, Berry Bros. & Rudd, for the past six years and have worked with them on the design and strategy work of their shop and office spaces at St James's. The offices sit within six inter-connected Grade II & II* listed buildings around Pickering Place, a hidden away square in historic St. James’, Central London. The existing office spaces, utilised by Berry Bros. & Rudd employees, underwent significant refurbishment and follows the success of their adjacent wine and spirits warehouse and shop. The shop was designed to evolve the traditions and culture of the special relationship between Berry Bros. & Rudd and their customers. The space is open and welcoming so that everyone from novices to fully fledged wine connoisseurs can share the experience and expertise on offer. The store connects the prestige of St James’s with the natural rural environment of winemaking by including a ceiling made from 100-year-old wine barrel staves reclaimed by the design team from a vineyard in France. The store includes a variety of textures and materials that have been selected to wear in and not to wear out. The variety is accentuated with different geometrical displays inspired by a wall in the Italian landscape. This geometry enables each distinct display to hold extensive tasting notes prepared by the BBR team and their 7 Masters of wine. A specific tasting area has been made in natural stone. Patina brass doors contain a fine wine reserve.
