Existing ground floor accommodation, especially kitchen and dining areas were constricted and poorly planned. At the same time, a significant volume of existing ancillary space was currently remote from the main house in two adjacent out buildings. The design strategy was to provide additional family living accommodation within a new substantial extension. The planning policy approach to enable construction of such a large extension within designated Greenbelt was to achieve a re-development which has less impact upon openness of the Greenbelt than the existing range of buildings. This was demonstrated by a volumetric analysis of existing structures to be balanced against a new proposed single consolidated building footprint. The new extension is designed as a large agricultural barn like structure, similar in character to the outbuildings it replaces and connected to the existing house by a glazed link structure / utility block. Glass, metal and charred timber are proposed to compliment existing natural stone and slate whilst maintaining a distinctly agricultural aesthetic.
