Alteration to existing property, Brownfield site, New Build, Within a Conservation Area
101 Ouseburn Road , Newcastle upon Tyne , Tyne And Wear , NE6 5AF , United Kingdom
Redevelopment of historic farmstead to create six new houses. West Steadings Farm sits within the Earsdon Village Conservation Area and provides the setting for two Grade II listed buildings The farmstead has been subdivided into discrete plots for the creation of private residential accommodation and garden spaces. Each plot is clearly identifiable, and via a process of selective demolition and extension, utilises one of the original building structures as the basis for a single residence. Historic building elements have been restored. New extensions are clearly contemporary. The development uses a palate of materials complementary to the character of the Conservation Area. Stone from demolition has been re-used on site as far as possible. Steel, aluminium, glass, untreated oak boarding and green roofing are used for construction of contemporary interventions; purposely contrasted and clearly distinct from the original building fabric.
