Rear Structural Glass Extension, Bath House Restoration & Full Refurbishment — Georgian Terraced House, Conservation Area, Southwark Following delicate negotiations with Southwark Council's conservation and design officers, MTA won both planning permission and Listed Building Consent for a contemporary rear structural glass extension to a Georgian terraced house in Kennington — linking the main house with a disconnected historic bath house which was carefully restored and converted into a new home office. The structurally glazed link extension is the defining element of the project — a fully transparent glass addition that allows unobstructed views and natural light to flow between the main house, the extension and the rear garden. Full-height sliding doors extend the living space seamlessly into the garden, dissolving the boundary between inside and outside. The transparency of the structure means the historic character of both the main Georgian house and the restored bath house reads clearly — the new addition connects without competing. The main house was fully refurbished throughout. The existing marble kitchen worktop was retained and complemented with new bespoke cabinetry and an antique brass island worktop. Existing floors were sanded and stained on the upper floors. A new air conditioning system was installed to the first floor together with a large walk-in closet in American black walnut. Both bathrooms feature polished plaster walls which reflect natural light and complement the marble tiling throughout. Electrical switch plates were replaced with Dowsing and Reynolds black face plates — a considered detail that ties the contemporary intervention to the historic character of the house. MTA worked closely with the client's interior designer to ensure a seamless result, project managing the works on site throughout.
