Ground Floor Extension & Full Refurbishment — End-of-Terrace House This ambitious refurbishment and ground floor rear extension in Shoreditch, Hackney reimagines the entire ground floor experience of a modest end-of-terrace house. The client wanted a home with genuine character — a space that felt intentional and personal, not simply functional. MTA won planning permission from Hackney Council and designed an open-plan living space that replaces the previously cramped kitchen and low-ceilinged rear rooms with a light-filled extension anchored by oversized glazed doors and a skylit roof. The design establishes an entirely new relationship between inside and out. Upstairs, raised ceiling heights and integrated joinery transform everyday practicality into moments of considered delight. The project's character comes through in its details: a confident stroke of dark orange steel frames the kitchen; warm oak joinery ties spaces together with precision; and bold colour accents give the architecture a sense of inevitability — every element feels as though it was always meant to be there. Natural light plays a central role throughout, drawing attention to textures and transitions that make the home feel effortlessly cohesive. Working closely with contractor JP Project Management, MTA delivered a project where every detail is intentional and every intervention enhances how the space is lived.
