Mansard Loft Conversion, Rear Ground Floor Extension & Basement Extension — Conservation Area Planning Precedent This project in Mile End, Tower Hamlets is one of MTA's most significant planning achievements — one of the first schemes to win permission for a mansard roof loft conversion, ground floor rear external alterations and basement extension in the Driffield Road and Medway Conservation Area. The precedent set by this project has since been followed by numerous other properties in the area. MTA navigated complex conservation area requirements with Tower Hamlets Council to secure permission for a comprehensive transformation of the property across three levels. The new mansard loft houses a dual-aspect master bedroom with stunning views toward Canary Wharf and a generous en-suite bathroom. On the ground floor, corner bifold glazed doors open the previously boxy rear room fully to the garden — when open, the corner of the house disappears entirely, creating a seamless open plan dining space extending into the garden. Exposed structural beams carry the loads to the boundary, allowing an uninterrupted open plan arrangement and unobstructed views. A new enlarged kitchen and dining area have become the hub of the home. In the basement, a new light well and bay window flood the previously dark lower ground floor with natural sunlight and ventilation, creating a new family room and a separate utility space.
