Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
Fully Glazed Structural Glass Roof Extension & Full Refurbishment — West Square Conservation Area MTA won planning permission from Southwark Council for a fully glazed structural glass roof extension to a terraced house in the West Square Conservation Area in Southwark — one of central London's most architecturally sensitive residential settings, facing the Imperial War Museum. Careful and detailed negotiations with Southwark's conservation officers secured permission for a lightweight transparent rooftop structure that sits within the traditional London roofscape without disturbing it. The roof extension is detailed entirely in structural glass — glass beams, glass posts and glass infill panels — achieving a genuinely weightless and transparent addition that lets the existing building read clearly beneath it. This level of structural glazing engineering is rare and required close collaboration between MTA, the structural engineer and specialist glazing contractors. The house was fully refurbished below — new bathrooms, a new kitchen, and a reconfigured lower ground floor opened up with pivoting doors. Spaces were carefully considered throughout to enhance the traditional floor plan while introducing a contemporary way of living. MTA worked closely with the client and contractor JP Project Management to deliver a beautifully finished home.
