Accommodating four mental health wards over two storeys, this new building is organised around two private courtyards which fill the interior with daylight and provide an intuitive focal point for way finding. Patients can directly access the courtyards from each ward. This autonomy reduces pressures on staff, removing a potential source of conflict, while encouraging physical health. The building is designed to encourage wellbeing. Generous sized windows provide a connection to the mature surrounding landscape. Acoustic ceilings and natural materials help create a calming environment. The bedroom corridor features a colonnade with seating between, encouraging patients to stop and contemplate, or socialise with others.
