Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II, Sited in AONB, Sited in SSSI area, Within a Conservation Area

Practice

Mark Wray Architects Limited

4 Beau Street , Bath , Somerset , BA1 1QY , United Kingdom

The former non-conformist chapel and manse stand one metre apart at the narrowest point and the challenge was how to unite the two Grade II listed structures as lightly as possible. After negotiations with the local conservation officer, a new link was created to the back of both buildings to ensure the qualities of the principal spaces were retained. The new transparent link contrasts with the existing solid masonry and provides access out to the rear garden and forms a new intimate courtyard between the two buildings. With the connection established, the former chapel was converted to create a new kitchen, dining and family space with the vestry repurposed as guest accommodation. Within the house, the kitchen was transformed into an intimate lounge and the existing outbuilding repurposed as a utility room.
