Substantial remodelling of a former factory space. This project to convert the building into a house and studio introduces a variety of differently proportioned and top-lit rooms to address the deep plan. The alterations to the existing building improve the performance of the building using passive design, adjustments to windows for solar gain, increased air tightness and thermal insulation, and active technology which includes mechanical ventilation and heat recovery. An air source heat pump provides the heating and hot water demands of the property efficiently, avoiding gas altogether, aided by improvements to the thermal performance of the building fabric through natural and renewable construction methods and materials.
