Murray Grove Hoxton Lynch Architects are the latest practice to be commissioned by Hackney Council as part of their Housing Supply Programme, overcoming competition with a design for around 60 new homes at Murray Grove in Hoxton. The site is an area at the base of an 18 storey 1960s tower, Thaxted Court, on the corner of Murray Grove and East Road in Hoxton, currently occupied by a 2 story car park structure. The problem of the integration of 1960s towers into a hospitable streetscape seems to be a recurring theme in our work at the moment. We lived and worked in Hoxton during the '90s and ‘00s and are very familiar with the problems that arise from the non-determinate landscapes around its modernist housing blocks, some of which provide accommodation of a very high standard. Our aim is to learn from these examples, and to contribute to the existing and emerging urban conditions. We propose to 'ground' the neighbouring buildings in a legible urban form made up of 2 new mid-rise blocks situated in a sequence of courtyards and gardens. The project was procured via an Expression of Interest process that attracted submissions from over 50 architectural practices. Five of these were shortlisted and tasked with developing a concept design proposal. Lynch begin work this month, and it is hoped that a planning application will be made at the end of the year following engagement with the local community. If successful, construction is expected to start on site next year, and should be completed by 2020.
