The work undertaken at the award-winning Hope Street Hotel (HSH) in Liverpool exemplifies how a substantial and ambitious programme of improvements and extensions can be undertaken sensitively to a Grade II-listed building within one of the finest conservation areas in Liverpool. The outcome complements the architectural quality of one of Liverpool’s crown jewels. HSH sits within the Canning Street Conservation Area. It is opposite the Grade II* listed art deco Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, and in the middle of Hope Street, bookended by the city’s two Cathedrals. HSH is an independent boutique 4* hotel – designed, owned and run by Dave Brewitt and his team since 2003. The hotel has been expanded twice since opening – in 2009, extending from the original 1860s building into the adjacent 1970s former police headquarters, and, most recently, into the former Royal School for the Blind (1851, with 1931 additions). The brief for the development was to create 62 additional bedrooms, as well as prime top-floor events space, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, and a private cinema - while ensuring that the building’s heritage was protected and, through the high standard of design and materials, respectful of its setting and context. L7 worked closely with Dave Brewitt to realise his vision - designing major interventions threading under, over and alongside the existing Grade II listed building. The design of the rooftop extension embraces the form and tone of the 1931 building. Extensive terraces and glazing provide spectacular views across the city and beyond.
