The Rutherford Cancer Centre North East, is the first privately-run centre in England to offer Proton Beam Therapy as well as a range of treatments. The facility offers world-leading technology including Infusion Therapy, High Precision Radiotherapy and Proton Beam Therapy. The building and its environment are designed with patients at their core. State of the art technology in a beautiful and calming natural therapeutic setting, aimed to improve treatment outcomes and reduce stress for patients, families and staff. The £38m Rutherford Cancer Centre North East opened in August 2018 to offer patients the very latest Proton Beam Technology in addition to other oncology services including radiotherapy, infusion therapies and diagnostics for cancer patients. The Centre is located in the village of Bomarsund in Northumberland, and is the first anchor tenant on the Earth Balance site. The first phase of an innovative ‘Health Village’ with plans for physiotherapy, dementia and palliative care facilities, in addition to housing. Early consultation with residents, Earth Balance, planners and local authority building control was essential, ensuring the building is located and designed to suit its sensitive landscape setting whilst meeting the technical challenges of the project. JDDK Architects are working with Rutherford Estates on the delivery of several other cancer treatment an diagnostic centres including in Liverpool and Reading.
