Another extension at St Benedict’s Catholic Upper School based on a first floor six classroom linear block with prayer room, at the front of the school. The block is plugged into the existing building, glass corridor connections are made to the existing circulation routes and two new courtyards, open to the elements, are formed to enable natural light to penetrate the deep plan. These courtyards have become integral to the design intended as a place of retreat or reflection that can double up as outdoor learning or even exhibitions areas. Additionally, locating the six classrooms at first floor level has freed up space for ground floor development and has resulted in a complete rethink of the staff office accommodation and entrances to the school.
