Lowlands (Phase 1 of 3) is an extensive, environmentally focussed refurbishment and extension, to an existing red brick bungalow in the Lower Wye Valley. The concept carefully increased the existing brick mass by re-ordering the ground floor internal spaces, and replacing the roof, in so doing, doubling the area. All whilst turning the focus towards the southern aspect and landscape views. Works included a re-sequencing of the existing entrance, new staircase, and creating three additional bedrooms, bathroom and ensuite. Two large dormers in the larger bedrooms, clad in charred timber, frame long reaching views down the Wye Valley. The old roof was removed and replaced with a new, engineered timber roof, fully filled insulation with recycled newspaper insulation. An air source heat pump and underfloor heating replaced the old heating oil system, and an MVHR unit keeps the air changes monitored and clean. Triple glazed windows an an airtight construction helps maintain heat loss throughout. Internally, the bespoke, birch plywood stair, balustrade and surround, connect the new and the old. https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/emerging-practice-hills-co-wins-go-ahead-for-wye-valley-bungalow-revamp/10045057.article
