The Total Environment Masterplan. Finalist in the Business Book of the Year Awards 2024. This book is a guide to help developers, business owners, CEOs, facilities managers on how to develop a successful strategy for the design and construction of masterplans, renovation projects and new buildings. It is based on the practical application of architectural and urban design knowledge, adapted and refined in the field over 20 years. I have illustrated key ideas with numerous case study projects. The chapters are organised to create a pathway for clients to follow. I argue that if the process is followed the result will be a facility that costs less to run and enables staff to be more productive. The resulting improved facility will attract new tenants or new members and enhance their brand. The book starts by outlining the critical importance of writing a good brief for the design team, This includes how their organisation works and their strategic vision. The brief is a tool that uses data including numbers of staff, pupils and members to plan how their organisation can become future-proofed by mapping environmental, technological, economic, societal, and political drivers. There is a specific chapter on the first big challenge our clients are likely to face which is gaining planning permission for their development. I argue that to achieve permission they will need to commission a great team to develop a strong value proposition. The stronger the story, the more chance the project will have of being approved. Finally I argue that the SPECS principles (simplicity, precision, efficiency, collaboration and sustainability) are the essential ingredients critical to the design of any project. I have written a chapter on each of these principles with a case study that illustrates how they were critical in the development of projects.
