In working with a neighbour, a contractor who lives on the next street and a joiner who lives next door, Facture Architects embraced working locally, forging friendships along the way. The concrete work in the kitchen is based on material processes that the architects understood from previous experience but tailored to simple methods of construction - the floor is formed from the ground floor slab (not a separate screed) and finished by hand whilst the worktop is a simple cast in-situ piece. They were able to find a middle ground for a client who understood that the finish could not be absolutely known and a contractor that was comfortable to follow the method without specialist tools and experience – the architects lent their own grinder/polisher tool and guided the process. The work is part of an exploration into how the manner in which something is made can show itself in the final piece. Service provided: Full RIBA Stages 1-6.
