New Build
Donald Insall Associates Ltd , 12 Devonshire Street , LONDON , W1G 7AB
Opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in April 2003 this new residential building for Gonville & Caius College provides 75 new student rooms, eight fellows' sets, three teaching rooms, student recreation and conference facilities. Parking is underground and a new free-standing Porters Lodge is located at the entrance to the site. The building is surrounded by internationally significant buildings and the site was previously occupied by an Edwardian villa, whose garden contained a number of specimen trees. These have been retained and used to create a sinuous building which acknowledges its historic context. The College identified sustainability as a key driver Three storeys of the building are clad in Ancaster stone, whilst the mostly glazed, fourth storey penthouse is set back behind a perimeter terrace. The building is highly insulated with low energy consumption. Background heating is transmitted by ducted air brought in via an earth tube which raises the fresh air temperature in winter and cools it in summer.
