Listed Building - Grade II
Donald Insall Associates Ltd , 12 Devonshire Street , LONDON , W1G 7AB
The Battle of Britain Monument on London's Victoria Embankment incorporates figurative bronze panels in high relief by the sculptor Paul Day, who was awarded the commission following a limited competition organised by the architects. The site consisted of a 25m wide x 2m high granite structure, Listed Grade ll, part of Bazalgette's 19th century embankment works and originally the top of a flue incorporated to ventilate the smoke from the steam trains of the underground railway beneath. A walkway was cut through the structure on the diagonal so that the sculptor's bronze reliefs could be experienced together, first on one side of the walkway then on the other and at an accessible level, ensuring maximum interaction with the public. In addition to collaborating with Paul Day on the design of monument, we have dealt with a multitude of organisations and committees in connection with the applications for Listed Building Consent and Planning Permissions. We have designed the plaques that surround the Monument and become involved with the production and presentation of an accurate list of names of the 2936 pilots and aircrew who flew in the battle which are grouped according to their country of origin against engravings of the aircraft involved. Donald Insall Associates have supervised the work on site and designed the lighting system which illuminates the work at night.
