The Union T1 and T2 buildings have been developed by Vita as a live/work community for young professionals and key city workers, providing affordable living units, affordable workspace, public amenity spaces and curated retail. The Union buildings are recognised as the residential core of St. John’s/Enterprise City, one of Manchester’s primary regeneration developments. The living accommodation, comprising of four, three and two bed apartments plus various studios, has been tailored to appeal to the creative and tech talent driving the broader occupation of Enterprise City. Together, the buildings are designed as a pair of towers united by their materiality but subtly distinguished by their overall architectural composition. Union One is 32 storeys incorporating 380 apartments/870 beds, with residents’ amenity space, gym and flexible commercial space. Union Two is 36 storeys incorporating 372 apartments/806 beds, with residents’ amenity space, three levels of co-working space and flexible commercial space. The towers are visually expressed with an articulated silver-grey ‘grid’ laid over an inner solid black colour ‘box’. The vertical ‘grid’ typically spans two storeys with four storey spans located at prominent locations across the height of each of the buildings to emphasise their slender and elegant form. This architectural approach integrates with the other new and existing buildings within Enterprise City and helps to characterise this evolving and exciting new neighbourhood in Manchester’s city centre.
