Brownfield site, New Build
Denton Corker Marshall was invited by Lend Lease to design one of the residential plots at the 2012 Olympics Athletes Village in Stratford. Situated on the most prominent location directly overlooking the Olympic Park, Plot NO 1 is the highest profile site in the Village. The development contains over 300 two and three bed premium, market and standard apartments as well as affordable homes. Sitting at the City end of the Village the residences have prime views over Regent Canal to Canary Wharf and the City of London. In response to this unique position in the Masterplan, the architecture has distinction through the subtle complexity of massing and facade articulation. Each of the independent blocks of apartments are visually subdivided, with their varying heights expressed as independent vertical masses. The pre-cast concrete facade elements incorporate a vocabulary of punched openings within a solid textured face. Different sized rectangular openings are carefully arranged into an apparently random composition. The facades also use a simple palette of materials throughout, including Portland stone-faced concrete and ribbed concrete panels that are punctuated by elegantly detailed metal clad balconies.
