Brownfield site, New Build
20 Farringdon Street is a new-build 12 storey commercial development in the City of London incorporating over 100,000ft2 of Grade A office accommodation. Denton Corker Marshall was appointed by HB Reavis to replace the existing 1980's building with an expanded and extended design solution to maximise the development. The location of the site offered the opportunity of visually linking the main city thoroughfare of Farringdon Street with the unique modern quiet backwater square of Fleet Place situated behind. The architectural concept reinforces this link with a dynamic facade design for the typical office floors that creates a 'wrap' around the three sides of the building to draw a strong visual connection between these two areas. The lower floors of the development respond to the existing building line around the pavement edge and the oversailing restrictions to Farringdon Street and Old Fleet Lane. The upper levels are set-back from the main facade line to create terraces as well as sensitively modelling the architectural expression at these levels. To 'contain' this complex massing the visual expression of these floors has been developed in the form of a monolithic sculpted block with the intricate geometry appearing as chiselled or cut-out pieces of the block. The cladding throughout incorporates floor to ceiling glazing to create a light, bright, desirable, modern office environment bringing new life to this important site and Farringdon Street.
