Brunswick Centre, London Retail | Public Realm | Concept Brunswick part 2 is an artistic installation for the Conrad Arcade. The concept originates from a symbolic poem written by Jane Austen in 1815 celebrating the unique higher standing of Brunswick Square compared to other London areas. The title of the poem is: “We are so Airy” and inspires the proposed design to soften the Brutalistic concrete arcade with the introduction of a new timber structure ascending from the columns upwards like a tree. The shopfronts are enveloped within this structure, becoming an integral part of it. The ceiling of the installation features the shop brands, projected on it, inviting shoppers to visit them. A survey of the residents of Brunswick centre showed a staggering majority of 88.89% in support of the design. The installation is free-standing fitting around the original building, without altering any Grade II elements or adding foundations. It is composed of environmentally friendly materials; primarily laminated timber. The design is set to achieve the highest BREEAM rating as well as a Platinum LEED certificate. The design features environmentally friendly, laser-cut, pre-casted, and pre-composed timber. The offsite fabrication saves a considerable amount of energy and wasted material and minimises any neighbourhood distraction. Also, it reduces the amount of construction hours spent on site which minimizes disruption to the residents and stores caused by construction. The installation will be entirely free-standing without any need for foundations and only requiring minimal support of the existing structure. The existing arcade is rather dark therefore new ground lighting will be installed to illuminate the entire installation. Also, projectors will be fitted in order to project information about the centre’s events and stores on the ceiling. The projected information will move around the installation creating a more dynamic atmosphere throughout the arcade – like a show of lights. This design is more complicated due to its more stylised THINK NATURE motif. This has been due to the correspondence with the artistic concept and the relation to it. The owner commissioned us with the task of creating something unique for this building as we specialise in artistic and sculptural architecture.
