Alteration to existing property
"The greatness of this (the Barcelona Pavillion) art cannot be expressed materially. Rather, it acts in ways which affect us even more profoundly. We can but sense it, yet it has us spellbound. We believe in it as we would in something marvellous." - Peter Behrens. The client, Earls Court and Olympia, were in the process of modernising their facilities for their on-going commitment to hosting national and international exhibitions in a world class facility. This portion of the site comprised of a temporary marshalling yard that served as one of the primary service routes into the exhibition halls. In early 2007 EC&O asked Jestico + Whiles Architects to produce a scheme that would aesthetically upgrade the façade to the West Hall. David Stanley Architects, acting on behalf of J+W Architects developed the brief. The strategy that was eventually adopted was to create a transparent façade comprising of coloured polycarbonate panels. The idea was that by day the panels would help illuminate the space within the great Hall; by night the façade would broadcast the inner functions of the Hall and act as a beacon of interest.
