Within a Conservation Area, Alteration to existing property
"Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins." - Mies Van Der Rohe. Gloucester Walk is located within the Kensington Conservation Area between Kensington Church Street and Hornton Street, north of Kensington High Street. In 2010 my clients, who owned both the ground and lower ground floor flats in their mansion block asked DSA to help them develop a scheme to combine the two flats to create a single family dwelling that was more suitable to the needs of their growing family. The brief that we developed therefore included the stripping out, combining and refurbishing of both flats as well as the construction of a two-storey rear extension at lower ground and ground floor levels. The public areas such as the Entrance, Reception, Office and Kitchen & Dining areas were located at ground floor level whilst the private areas such as Bedrooms, Bathrooms and Wardrobes were positioned at lower ground floor level. The lower ground floor level benefits from a mechanical ventilation system as well as natural ventilation and natural light from a remote controlled operated sliding rooflight.
