Real Beijing – Malatang Restaurant, London, UK Project Overview Located in London, UK, the Real Beijing Malatang Restaurant is a culinary and architectural homage to Sichuan’s landscape and food culture. Drawing inspiration from the birthplace of Malatang, this project was designed to offer an immersive dining experience that mirrors the beauty of Sichuan’s rolling mountains, rivers, and valleys. Malatang, originating from the Yangtze River in Sichuan, was historically a remedy for boat trackers battling damp and foggy weather. Over time, this warming, herb-infused hotpot evolved into a widely beloved dish, spreading across China. Our design proposal sought to encapsulate this rich cultural narrative through an evocative and nature-inspired interior. Design Concept & Spatial Experience The restaurant’s defining architectural feature is its upside-down staggering louvre ceiling, which mimics the undulating terrain of Sichuan’s mountains and valleys. This dynamic installation creates a floating landscape effect, enhancing the spatial experience and visually transporting diners into the heart of Sichuan’s natural beauty. Location & Completion Client: Real Beijing Restaurant Ltd. Location: London, UK Completion: September 2022 By blending storytelling, design, and gastronomy, the Real Beijing Malatang Restaurant establishes itself as a landmark dining experience, celebrating the rich heritage of Sichuan’s food culture in a modern, architecturally striking setting.
