Project Overview Commissioned by Sinan Mansions as part of the Modern Sinan event series, the ResoNet Pavilion was created to celebrate Chinese New Year 2017. This temporary installation combined architecture, interactive technology, and cultural symbolism to transform the public realm into an immersive experience. The pavilion featured an interactive LED light installation—the ResoNet—which responded to vibration stimuli from visitors and environmental elements. By day, the translucent polypropylene panels resembled an ice sculpture, while at night, the structure transformed into a dynamic, glowing form, reminiscent of the Northern Lights. Design Concept & Cultural Significance The ResoNet name derives from “resonance” and “network,” highlighting its role in visualizing natural frequencies through interactive LED responses. The installation was designed in two stages: - Stage 1: A crystalline ice-like pavilion for the Western New Year. - Stage 2: A phoenix-feather-inspired cladding symbolizing the Year of the Rooster. The lunar-effect laminated resin panels shifted colors based on viewing angles and lighting conditions, enhancing its ephemeral qualities. Inspired by the form of a Jingle Bell, the pavilion invited visitors to symbolically “ring in the New Year.” The traditional Chinese coin motif—a square within a circle—was integrated into the cladding, signifying prosperity and good fortune. Function & Public Engagement Beyond its artistic and architectural expression, the ResoNet Pavilion served as a gathering space where visitors could rest, interact with the LED net, and make Spring Festival wishes with family and friends. Additionally, it functioned as a center stage for outdoor performances and events, fostering community engagement. Awards & Recognition The ResoNet Pavilion has received multiple international awards, including: - 2022.01 – Winner of the Asian Design Prize (Space/Architecture category) - 2017.10 – Winner of the Hong Kong A&D Trophy Award (Best Pop-Up in Architecture) - 2017.10, Merit Award, DFA Design for Asia Awards in Culture, Public and Exhibition Spaces Category, Hongkong/China. - 2017.06 – IDA Bronze Award (Architecture Exhibits, Pavilions & Exhibitions) - 2017.04 – Finalist, Architizer A+Design Award (Architecture + Color category) - 2017.04 – Gold A’ Design Award (Lighting Products & Lighting Projects Design) The project exemplifies the intersection of art, culture, architecture, and technology, creating both a physical and ephemeral experience that celebrates tradition through innovation.
