Sited in AONB, Sited in Greenbelt land
32 Frederick Street , Birmingham , West Midlands , B1 3HH , United Kingdom
The West Midlands Interchange (WMI) is an 8 million sq ft logistics masterplan and the UK’s largest Strategic Rail Freight Interchange, integrating road, rail and canal infrastructure. Set within the Green Belt and near an AONB, the scheme prioritises environmental enhancement, delivering 109 acres of new country parks, extensive woodland planting, and robust ecological strategies. Community-informed design, sensitive massing, and landscape buffers mitigate visual impact. Biodiversity measures, archaeological investigations, and canal enhancements are embedded. The development targets net zero carbon, with aspirations for WELL, BREEAM Excellent/Outstanding, and LEED certifications across its phased delivery.
