London Gateway, the UK’s first deep-sea container port for over 25 years, is the most technically advanced container port in the world, integrated with Europe’s largest logistics park to provide access to the largest consumer markets in the UK. The new port at Stanford-le-Hope in Essex will eventually handle 3.5 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), providing a much needed increase in capacity for the UK’s container terminals. The logistics park will offer 9.5 million square feet for sorting incoming goods for distribution direct to retail outlets, cutting out lengthy road transport. The £1.5 billion project is the largest investment scheme in the South East of England and currently set to be the largest creator of new jobs in the UK. The first phase of the port opened in October 2013. Chetwoods developed the masterplan for the project and will be responsible for the design of the individual units that will locate on the 1,500 acre logistics park. Currently Chetwoods have successfully delivered two major plots, the first a bespoke BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rated, 33,000sq.ft three-storey landmark head office for the new London Gateway container port and distribution park. The building is the central hub from where all IT port operations will be controlled. It includes a new IT control room for the Port, development welfare facilities, canteen, administration offices and site management facilities. The second plot being delivered is the 110,000 sq.ft Port Welfare and Maintenance workshop building, The main workshop building providing on-site repairs and maintenance for cranes, straddle carriers and heavy duty port equipment, whilst the Port Staff Welfare Building provides rest, recreation and canteen facilities for maintenance and port staff.
